Get behind the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre

  • Jun 8, 2017

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre telethon is pulling together some of Australia’s best known personalities to work the phones on World Refugee Day as the organisation seeks to raise $300,000 to continue its work.

The ASRC aims to ensure those seeking asylum in Australia have their human rights upheld and that those seeking asylum receive support and opportunities to live independently.

On June 20, they’ll be calling for donations to help continue their work providing shelter, healthcare and food aid to the 3000 people they support each year.

“Your donation will also help the additional 1562 people seeking asylum who will be at our doorstep, in desperate need of home and hope by Christmas,” the organisers say.

“Every donation, small or large will have an incredible impact.”

  • To donate call: 1300 692 772

  • Or SMS HOPE to 0437 371 371 to donate $20

  • Phone lines open June 20 – 6am to midnight

  • Or you can donate any time here

And in good news for those planning on giving, you may also end up chatting with some pretty famous peeps!

About the ASRC

The ASRC began as a TAFE project in 2001, if you can believe that! Founder Kon Karapanagiotidis discovered that people seeking asylum were struggling with no basic support.

That same year, the ASRC was established as an independent, community-led organisation.

The ASRC now “advocates for the human rights of people seeking asylum exempt from the pressures of government or the private sector”.

Today, the ASRC is the largest independent human rights organisation for refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia.

“We offer 30 holistic programs that protect people seeking asylum from persecution and destitution, support well-being and dignity, and empower people to advance their own future.

“We are proudly owned and run by our community and supported by a network of more than 1300 volunteers and 90 staff in assisting around 3000 people seeking asylum each year.”
